Description

This class will help you master fitting and sewing any pattern.

tissue-fitting at a Connecticut Palmer/Pletsch workshop

Because we do hands-on fitting, we continue to be innovative and fine-tune our skills. We’ve examined and used many approaches to fitting over the years. Today we teach what works the best and easiest for YOU! We do very little measuring because measuring does not tell you all you need to know about the body you are fitting. Learning to tissue-fit patterns is a process. We fit you, then teach you to fit yourself!

Body Map worksheet and fitting patternThe first day we will give you a comprehensive presentation of The Palmer/Pletsch Tissue-Fitting Method. Then we will alter Butterick B6849, our sheath dress pattern, to fit your body. Once you have fitted this dress, you will know what alterations are necessary in the most fitted garment you would ever sew. It will become your own personal “body map,” reminding you of your alterations. Next you will tissue-fit fashion patterns and you may cut some of them out of fabric to learn to fabric-fit.

After that, you will continue tissue-fitting fashion patterns. We encourage starting with McCall’s Palmer/Pletsch patterns first, as they have alteration lines on the tissue and fit tips in the guidesheets. Then venture to whatever designs you want—this method works with patterns from any pattern company.

Since the tissue replaces making a muslin, you can go confidently right to your fashion fabric. You will cut out some of the altered patterns in fabrics and learn to pin-fit the fabrics and fine-tune the fit to both sides of your body. By the end of the class, you will be EMPOWERED to sew any pattern design and make it fit YOU.

OPTIONAL EVENTS

FIT TEACHER TRAINING

The day after the New York City fabric tour, spend the day fitting others in a variety of fashions so that you will be confident when you are on your own teaching. Pamela Leggett will be there observing, helping, and available to answer questions if you get stuck. You will also receive a download with camera-ready handouts for your classes, slides and a script for teaching Fit, a variety of slide presentations in PowerPoint (which allows you to rearrange slides for any length presentation), class format ideas, sample promotional flyers and marketing materials. You will be able to order the McCall’s Palmer/Pletsch basic fit patterns at a reduced price for use in your classes. Includes lunch, professional camera-ready materials, and download of digital slides with script. The value of the slides alone is over $1,000. The price of the class is $195.

NOTE: Teacher Training can only be taken if you are also registered for this workshop.

The following optional events can be scheduled directly with Pamela Leggett:

PRE-WORKSHOP CUSTOM DRESS FORM CLASS

The day before the workshop, join Pamela Leggett to make a custom dress form—the perfect replica of yourself—to aid in your fitting once you get home. The $150 price includes the kit and lunch. Contact Pamela directly for more information and to reserve your spot — pamela@pamelaspatterns.com.

A dress form is a useful tool for fitting and design. The problem is getting one to fit all your curves and “scallops”.  In this class, we will use an adjustable form that you will “build and pad” to look just like you! Other than the dress form, the supplies are simple – a bra and undies, batting and fiberfill, and some bandaging from the drug store.  We’ll finish the form with a custom cover.  With the skills you learn, you will be able to change the dress form as your body changes.  You will now be well equipped for your fitting and design challenges!

NYC FABRIC SHOPPING TOUR
The day after the workshop, join Pamela Leggett for a guided shopping tour of New York City’s fabric stores throughout the garment district. You will leave for NYC around 7:30 am and return around 9:00 pm. New York City is a fabulous place to visit and shop for fabrics, trims, buttons and so much more!  Pamela will be your guide for the day to explore Mood (Project Runway’s store), B & J’s (Pamela’s favorite) and other stores in the Garment District. The $150 tour price includes transportation, the fabric tour, and lunch. Contact Pamela directly for more information and to reserve your spot — pamela@pamelaspatterns.com.

DINNER AND A MOVIE
If enough people are interested, we will order in dinner and watch a fashion-related movie. Pamela has several that you will enjoy (a customer favorite is the independent smash, Men Of The Cloth). There is no charge for this; everyone pays for their own dinner.

Take fit again.

The study of fit is ongoing. As fashion changes, there are new fit challenges. You will have four full days to tissue-fit and fabric-fit all the new patterns you desire. Bring questions you want answered, and plan to spend time watching others being fit—there is much to learn in that process!

And again, and again…

Continue to refine and MASTER your fitting and sewing skills under our expert guidance. If you teach fit, you will want to watch even more bodies being fitted and more alteration challenges tackled. You will truly achieve your masters in fit!!
