We are fortunate to have Janet Dapson, Palmer/Pletsch Certified Sewing Instructor, join forces with Palmer/Pletsch to bring our popular fit workshops to the midwest. Janet's business, Fabrications, is located in Richland, in southwest Michigan, near Kalamazoo.

Janet has attained the Palmer/Plestch master level of Educational Associate, specializing in bodice/skirt/dress/pant fitting and tailoring techniques. In addtion to our Palmer/Pletsch Fit and Pant workshops, she offers basic to advanced sewing classes, including garment fitting and construction, at her specialty fabric store.

Although she has been sewing for over 40 years, much of Janet's skill was learned on her own. With a degree in biology, sewing was a creative diversion from her career in the biomedical field; it also enabled her to create the professional wardrobe required for her job. Janet eventually decided to begin a career change, turning her sewing passion into a business. After taking in-depth courses with Pati Palmer and her colleagues in Portland, Oregon, Janet spent several years teaching sewing at her home and at the local Bernina store.

In 2003, Janet, her husband, and daughter opened Fabrications.

Although most of the classes are now held at Fabrications, Janet travels throughout the midwest to present lectures and seminars on the Palmer/Pletsch methods.

She recently added an additional 1500 square foot classroom and extension of her store. This made way for a satellite Palmer/Pletsch 4-day Workshop location.

Palmer/Pletsch has become known for its successes in teaching people to fit. Satellite locations will make the workshops accessible to more people. We welcome Janet and wish her success. In 2013, Pati Palmer will be joining Janet in teaching two workshops.

The store, which includes a large classroom, occupies approximately 3,000 square feet in the Clocktower Green complex just north of the village of Richland. Click on the logo above to learn more, and for driving directions.

The classroom space is outfitted with new daylight-type lighting, extra electrical circuits and soft carpeting. Like the present store, the new classroom has large windows that let in a lot of natural light. These are curtained to take advantage of that asset while creating a sense of privacy for fit classes. Sixteen sewing tables, six Sew-Brite cutting tables and six ironing stations are available.

Classes based on the Palmer/Pletsch books, "Fit for Real People", "Pants for Real People" and “Jackets for Real People” are conducted on a regular basis.

All fabrics are hand selected and are primarily natural fibers; silks, wools, cottons, rayons and linens. Unusual blends are a specialty, with combinations such as silk/cashmere, wool/cashmere, wool/silk, silk/cotton, cotton/Lycra, wool/Lycra and silk/Lycra.

Do You Need a Hotel?

If you are driving to your Michigan Sewing Vacation, we recommend the Comfort Inn Plainwell (269-685-9891), with recently updated rooms. Restaurants and shopping are nearby. An added bonus is being able to stop at the Plainwell Ice Cream Company for what the locals contend is the best ice cream in the country!

The Comfort Inn Kalamazoo (269-384-2800), located about 5 miles from the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport, is more convenient if you are flying. Limousine service is available from the airport to the hotel by Leisure Limousine Service (269-381-5460); cost is $24.00 one way. The hotel is located at the edge of downtown Kalamazoo, within walking distance of restaurants and shops—be sure to wear comfortable shoes. If arriving by air, contact Fabrications to arrange transportation from the hotel to the store.
